History Formal Catholic education began in San Juan County, New Mexico in 1910 with development of St. Thomas Catholic School in the community of Waterflow, NM. Not long after, the educational duties were taken over by sisters of the Order of St. Ursuline. In the 1950's, the school was moved to Farmington and renamed Sacred Heart Catholic School, both in honor of the hosting parish and the Diocesan Cathedral in Gallup, NM.

In 1993, Sacred Heart Catholic School was privatized by the Diocese of Gallup. The school is operated by an elected school board as a private, ecumenical school open to all faiths.  It maintains its Catholic identity by adhering to the requirements of the Diocese of Gallup.

Quality School

Catholic schools have long enjoyed a reputation for academic excellence. Sacred Heart Catholic School is no exception.

 State Accredited

Sacred Heart Catholic School is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.  Our programs are considered excellent by area standards and students consistently perform well.

God Centered Environment

Sacred Heart Catholic School is equally committed to the moral and religious development of its students.  The school’s efforts at moral and religious development are both uniquely Catholic and Christian.

Students begin and each day with classroom prayer service.  They receive daily religious instruction and attend Mass weekly.  During Lent, children attend weekly Stations of the Cross.  During Advent, each class participates in projects to make Christmas better for others.   We celebrate in National Catholic Schools Week to celebrate catholic education and Christianity.  We advance Christian Catholicism through teaching and living the law of love.  It is the basis of our school discipline.

Faculty

Sacred Heart Catholic School teachers are certified and experienced Early Childhood educators.  All of our teachers could make more money teaching in public schools, but they have chosen to teach in a positive Christian environment.

We offer Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade classes.  Maintaining small student to teacher ratios. Pre-Kindergarten is 24 students to 2 teachers.  Kindergarten is 15 students to 1 teacher. And 1st through 5th grade is 20 students to 1 teacher.

Student Awards

Our 3rd through 5th grades participate in Honor Roll Awards given quarterly, with a semester and yearly award ceremony.  All of our students participate in the Perfect Attendance awards.

Parent/Guardian Obligations

Sacred Heart Catholic School can offer lower tuition than other private schools in the area because of the fund-raisers put on by our Home & School Association, support of local Parishes, Private donations and parental/guardian volunteers.  Need based assistance makes our school affordable to families of all income levels.  We offer student scholarships based on family financial need.  Further aid also may be available to Sacred Heart Catholic Students through the Southwest Indian Foundation, Educate New Mexico, and other local donations

All Parents/Guardians are required to offer 40 ‘Contract Service Hours’ per year.  Volunteering to assist the school in areas of fund-raising and daily school needs is how parents meet this obligation

An other area that Parents/Guardians are required to participate in is the yearly Night To Remember function, which is usually held in May.  This is the largest fund-raiser that Sacred Heart Catholic School holds each year.  Started in 1991, this event has become very well known in the Four Corners area.  Parents are contracted to buy or sell at least one ticket.  We then draw for fabulous prizes donated by local businesses and we are able to offer a grand prize of $10,000.00 for the final ticket drawn.  Night to Remember is a festive evening of dinner, prize giveaways, and dancing to live music.

Uniform Policy

All of our students are required to wear uniforms.  The girls wear plaid jumpers, the boys wear white shirts and black slacks.  At the end and beginning of each year parents organize a uniform sale/swap, to give families an inexpensive way to acquire a uniform.  Wearing uniforms allows the students to concentrate on their academics and studies.

Other Programs

Sacred Heart Catholic School offers a hot lunch program. Daily lunches are offered to the students and staff.  For a small fee a healthy lunch meal can be obtained, or the students are allowed to bring lunch from home.

We also offer an after school program for parents/guardians who need their children to stay until they can be picked up.  A small fee is paid for the hours your child attends.  Supervised homework assistance is available.

For more information on how your child can become a part of the Sacred Heart Catholic School student body, please call 505.325.7152 for assistance.
