Week 17 | December 11 - 15
Dear Parents,
At SHCS, our philosophy includes the following statement: "The students are empowered to face the challenges of modern society and use the skills they have developed to become leaders committed to justice, peace, and love." As a School Counselor at Piedra Vista High School for eleven years, I witnessed first-hand how prepared SHCS students are when they enter high school. Our students leave here with the skills and the confidence to be leaders at their next school. Hopefully, in the next four years, we can say that our students leave
SHCHS with their high school diploma, ready and prepared for the next phase of their life. We are slowly getting the word out to the parishes in San Juan County about our plans for expanding to 9th grade next year. We have everything we need to make it a reality; we just need students! Thank you for your prayers for our school. I know that if it is God's will for us to expand, which I truly believe it is, it will happen in His time.
Choir Performance at the Convention Center
Mrs. Gapinksi took our choir to the Republican Women's Luncheon on Thursday, December 8 to perform Christmas songs. The choir did an excellent job. We are so fortunate to have a choir with children who love to sing, and a choir director who loves for our children to sing. The SHCS Choir has represented our school beautifully this year.
St. Nick Shop
The international Appreciation Club did a great job with their St. Nick Shop. Thank you for supporting the IA Club's project and thanks to Mrs. S for making this all possible. I love seeing the kiddos so happy buying gifts for others, and the club members working so hard to keep the shop stocked and the gifts wrapped. What a wonderful thing this is for our school!
School Christmas Party
Our school Christmas party was Friday night, and it was a huge success! The Family Center was packed with children and adults in their pajamas, and everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks to Tina Trujillo and the Mohon family for organizing and funding the party, and to Mrs. Carla for all her work to make it run so smoothly. I can't wait to see what Tina and Carla do for our school next!
Robotics Competition
We had three teams competing in our first Robotics competition yesterday at Heights Middle School. Our teams are Feral Cats, Junkyard Dogs, and Snake Pit. From Mr. Idzerda: Snake Pit placed at the tournament. The kids who were there persisted, problem-solved, and worked for a solid eight hours. They never gave up, even when one of the computers quit. The next tournament is in Albuquerque on February 10. It looks like we need a trophy case because they earned two trophies! Robotics is new to our school, and they did great in their first competition. Nice job!
8th Grade Pizza Sale
The 8th graders will sell pizza again tomorrow, Monday, December 11. Each slice of pizza is $2.00. Everyone who gets pizza also gets a drink and a cookie. Thank you for supporting the 8th graders and they raise money for their Legacy project.
Christmas Program
Our Christmas program is Monday, December 11 at 6:00 PM in the church. All grade levels will be performing. Students need to arrive at the church no later than 5:45 pm and sit with their teacher and class. The program begins at 6 pm and should last about 40 minutes. Students can wear "Christmas dress clothes" or anything considered "Sunday best." Father Tim has asked everyone to bring canned goods or non-perishables to the program as an offering.
Ukulele Group
Our amazing ukulele group, under the direction of Mrs. idzerda, will be performing at San Juan Care Center right after school on Tuesday, December 12 in lieu of practice that day. We will send out more information tomorrow.
Christmas Lunch
Families and guests are invited to lunch on Wednesday, December 13, to celebrate Christmas. Hot lunch is baked ham, macaroni and cheese, green beans, dinner roll, and a dessert. Meals for guests are $5.00 each. Mrs. Carla needs to know by 3:30 PM on Monday, December 11 if you would like a hot lunch.
Christmas Break starts at 1:00 PM on Friday, December 15
We
will
have before school care, but we
will not
have after school care. Semester 2 starts
Tuesday, January 2, 2024.
Updated Family Handbook
Thank you to everyone who helped update our Family Handbook. We will have it published on our website this week.
Updated Dress Code
We will start enforcing our updated dress code in January. It is attached. As more people read it, there could be more clarifications. Please let me know if you have any questions at all.
Crosswalk
Will you please consider volunteering at our crosswalk in the mornings and afternoons? Also, will you please use the crosswalk in the mornings and afternoons? I get so nervous when I see our precious little ones run across the street not in our crosswalk. Thank you!
Online Spirit Shop
We showed off our new spirit wear at the Christmas party Friday night, and it will be available on our website this week. Thank you for your patience but our merchandise is so great, it was definitely worth the wait.
Save the Date for Parent Meeting on Wednesday, January 10, 2024
We will have a very important meeting for everyone on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 6:00 PM in the Family Center. We will be discussing our budget, tuition for next year, and spring fundraising.
I am amazed every day at how busy our little school is. Thank you for trusting SHCS with your children.
